I've always thought when it comes to addictions ie. drugs, alcohol or gambling, you have to be able to acknowledge your problem or addiction, or you will never recover. I once heard someone say "I may have a small drinking problem." That while he we sat at the nearest watering hole. Either there is a problem or there isn't--Period. In the Editorial Section of the Toronto Star, it said that people are using "twice as much paper as they did 20 years." Maybe we are, maybe not. It's no consolation to the Star or any Newspaper because the fact of the matter is that, people are getting their information from other sources, including the Internet. And it is affecting the media overall but among the one's being hurt the most is Newspapers. The National Post reported that the Star just a few weeks ago had fired two of it's key staff and most recently, the Sun did the same. It's because of overall readership is down dramatically and because they are selling less, it will force some Companies to re-think publishing in a newspaper. These days you can go to your PC to look for a job, the employment office for the same thing, or Internet cafe place or even the Library to do your job searching. You can find your up to date news like what you would see on the Six O Clock news or read in the Paper the next day. So when the Star says we're using twice as much paper today, I think it's small consolation. And they don't say it directly, but they are struggling, there are fewer people buying their Paper today, and to deny it, is like fooling yourself. The National wrote about both the Star and it's struggles as well as the Sun. But they're all struggling. And they shouldn't deny it either. Here's what they had to say.
bt logo

Don Cherry, Order of Canada

If there's one bright spot on CBC, it's Rex Murphy. His commentary's are just great. Mark Stein and his book "America Alone" being the latest example. So, I'll offer my apologies since I'm guessing there were at least a few BT'ers who have already posted on this. It certainly got the attention of NP readers as seen in the letters to the Editor. I couldn't post yesterday 'cause my PC wouldn't connect to the Net. Just quickly, I'll tell you about a book I picked up at recently. Canada Strong and Free by Preston Manning and Mike Harris could not be found at any bookstore in Toronto. Including 'World''s biggest Bookstore" (WBB) I tried Chapters, and the local Library. No dice. I put an order in for the book. The political section at the WBB is down stairs and in the back. A look at the front of the Chapters/Indigo store, does not reveal any books from Conservative Authors. pt. 1
pt. 2 I think these bookstores could pay a price just like the Newspapers. People could start buying their books and Movies on EBay and other Internet places. It's owned by the Star. What you have to remember is that Metro, along with all the other magazines (24 Hours, Sun, Dose, the National Post), are published with the idea that readers will buy their regular publication. So it seems to me that people are reading their Metro News and that's it. And when you consider the price, why buy it? In Adam Daifallah's book Rescuing Canada's Right, it suggests an organization, or something to that effect (Sorry Adam), that track the media and it's bias, and then have it exploited so everyone can see everything that the MSM reports. And there is lots of it. There's at least one person on the "Left" who would like to make things worse. It's called "Gerard
Kennedy and the Government's roll on Media" Hit the link, It's all bad but one thing he says is the need to change the rules of the CRTC. Adam in his book suggests the same thing, though I think Kennedy's idea is quite a bit different. But Kennedy recognizes the fact that there needs to be control of the Internet (and thus us Blogging Tories), and that the Interactive Media is getting larger. I think that's smart. At least he knows where the trend is going and what the future is in media. Average Canadians ARE getting their Info from other sources other then TV, radio, Newspaper, Magazine. But I think, and I've suspicious of this for a while, that the Newspapers (Sun, Star, G&M, National Post) are the ones being hardest hit. One things for sure. If you thought liberal media was bad now, wait 'til you hear what Kennedy has to say on the matter. And he even got applause for it.
bt logo

Take that liberals.

Okay look, I'm not exactly happy about Flaherty's announcement to tax income trusts. Canadians are worried about the many troops that have been killed in the Southern part of Afghanistan where our troops are stationed. And rightfully so. Maybe this is the answer. Though, I'm not sure what will happen to our troops after this. The Dutch Army will be stationed in the South, perhaps possibly along side our troops. Still, I'm not sure. I've added a couple of links. Both are from the National Post on the Dutch Army and the other on Helicopters. It mentions that the defense department is buying these choppers so they can be used in Afghanistan. The Defense dept. denies this. I say they should. A lot of our troops have been killed by roadside bombs. Helicopters that will deploy troops from one area to the other will be safe from this. The biggest issue after this is anti-aircraft weapons. Does the taliban even have them? We shouldn't let politics get in the way. Anyways, by the time this equipment becomes operational (2008), we could loose a lot more of our men and women of our armed forces. I just hope Harper will be able come through this. Most Canadians support our troops but we are concerned about the mission. Pray and support our troops.
bt logo

Have we heard this before

Ontario finance Minister Greg Sorbara, the man who was once the subject to a scandal not to far back, is giving a bad forecast for Ontario. And he's got the Star on his side to help him do it. So, who do they blame this time? Well everyone, except themselves. By everyone I mean the federal Government and it's surpluse, (Listen Greg, don't you have a surplus?), I guess this means you won't have one much longer. Or will you. Surpluses mean high taxes. I don't get it, why wouldn't you criticize PMPM when he ran surpluses year after year. They're bad Greg. As bad as deficits. This Ontario Gov't. likes to pass blame, like the $5.6 billion deficit by the previous Gov't. Dalton, had been raving about that for almost a year after the election. They criticized Rona Ambrose for her Environmental program saying it would be hazardous to the Auto sector here in Ontario. They still don't mention the funding for education from the federal Gov't. to Ontario, except they keep it for themselves. John Tory is on record for saying he would get rid of the health tax if elected Premier. Greg has comments about that too. So if you're interested, have a look see. But I'm so tired of this blame game. It's everyone else's fault. I'm not even going to post on these matters anymore. Here it is. Rest assured, his days are numbered. Speaking to local business people, he spoke of a "competitive and innovative regime". Also, "This means personal income tax cuts that are fair, progressive, rewards savings and boost productivity." Corporate taxes must be competitive, and so on, and so on... Well former premier, forgive me for being skeptical, but Canadians and especially Ontario have heard this song and dance before. Like eg. I'll get rid of the GST, or P.E.T. who said he would lower gas prices back in the early '80's but then increased it. Or Flip, flop, mcfly who said "I won't raise your taxes." Then brought in the health tax. In the first budget. Hello. Boob. Let's get something straight. Left wing governments are tax and spend governments. End of story. In fact, I would say the NDP are a little more lenient on taxes because they would rather raise the basic personal amount to $15,000 (that how much a person can make without paying personal taxes), instead of the current 8 or 9 thousand. But of course the Dippers idea is tax the rich to death. Except theirs of course. Word of advice Boob, try finding another way to fool people into voting for you, again. That being said, I hope he does become the next liberal leader. ha, ha.
bt logo

Question asked on CPAC

I just love watching CPAC because of it's unbiased reporting. So tonight on Outburst, host Glen McInnis asked people in the Ottawa area this question. 'How could Canada best emerge on the world stage?' I don't remember every word to every participant so bear with me please. There were approx. 20. At least four people said rebuild the military. Peacekeeping is important too, Three people. Address the needs of people, she was talking about people in Canada. Our healthcare system is something we cherish and is an example for other countries around the World said one other person. A peaceful nation which the participant said had to do with peacekeeping. (I agree with that, because even tonight there are bloggers who are posting about violence in France, sad.) Some suggested our economy because it's very strong is a good example for other countries. One suggested the Environment as being a good example. One said peacekeeping, he also said that because NATO is not helping Canada in Afghanistan, we need to
re-arm our troops there and do everything to help them. Take that Jack Layton.
He believes in the mission there. Then again, there's not many who agree with taliban Jack. Most people agreed that Canada has a good foreign policy already. There was one exception. He said we need to re-focus our priorities. This is the thing, CPAC does edit for content and space, but whatever is being said is being said. You don't get this CBC, CTV biased reporting that puts things in a certain perspective to get a liberal or anti-Tory result. They tell it like it is. For the record
here's my opinion. Back when that Iranian women reporter was killed, a Toronto Sun commentary said that a strong military may have, or could have prevented the death of this reporter, who was also Canadian with an Iranian descent. We could have negotiated with the Iranian Gov't. while the Navy puts an Aircraft Carrier off
the coast of Iran to put a blunt message to them as in, don't lay a finger on her, or else. A foreign affairs policy includes protecting our own people. And a strong military is the means to a good foreign policy. It's the basis for a reputation that is respected around the world. You can't just push us around. We can achieve peaceful objectives, just don't hurt our people. A military compliments a foreign policy. It's one more option, for any Government. It's like having the icing on a cake. Which is why I wonder why the previous liberal Gov't. cut it back so badly. I believe we could have saved the life of this reporter. I wish we had. That being said, I'll watch cpac over any of the other news.
bt logo

liberal bias towards women

I'll make this relatively short. Read what the Post has to say.
bt logo

Tory Enviro plan.

The Conservative Government will release their Environmental plan but as we already heard, there are critics, including ON. Like I said, it's important for us bloggers to have that spirit because this is what I believe Conservative Governments want people to have. If we believe in ourselves, let us create our own destiny, then we can succeed. This may seem odvious to us already and to be honest, I'm only just discovering this myself, but when you think of it, a Conservative agenda wants us to have an entrepreneurial spirit. A liberal gov't. may want the same but Conservatives rely a little more on it. Because liberals want us to rely on government for everything we need, right? Conservatives want us to stand out. To be leaders, like Preston Manning is. Because we need it, in order to spread Conservatism across the Country. It's an entrepreneurial message we want to send. Where everyone can be a winner, start a movement, much like Stephen Taylor who started Blogging Tories, start a Conservative magazine to counter the left wing media. Start a think tank much like the Fraser Institute to get people's opinion and change it, to a what a Conservative believes. We may not be millionaires yet and may not get there, but let's believe in ourselves, and get the message out there. Believe.
bt logo

If I were Mayor of Toronto.

There are more links to this post. I think she represents what's best for the City of Toronto. I certainly will not support socialist David Miller, even though he'll probably win. To bad. If he gets the four years he's asking for, God help us all. When the Lakeshore plan was introduced a couple weeks ago, it suggested creating a toll fee to help pay for shoreline construction. Well, I think a Miller mandate will implement those fees. With no construction. Except maybe the Gardner being taken down. TTC fares will go up to something over $3.00. Parking enforcement officers will have their quotas increased. (I think they do hate drivers). Property taxes skyrocketing. A toll is bad for business and bad for people in general. I'd watch for small business owners to move somewhere else in the surrounding areas like Mississauga, Brampton, Pickering, Vaughn, Richmond Hill. So, here's what I would do if I were the Mayor of this great City called Toronto.

1. A Cleaner City: It's dirty to say the least, though it can be argued it's cleaner then most U.S. Cities, but dirty according to our standards. It used to look great didn't it? A clean City is what draws tourists here. And it's what's brings them back. Thus, in the long run, City Council will spend less money for tourism because of the City's reputation of having a clean City. People who visit will naturally tell other people in a positive way and so it will draw more people here. Some come here for business but would never spend a vacation here. I believe there's lot's here that people will enjoy. Like Casa Loma or CN Tower, but we need to clean up before we invite people here. I believe that it takes the co-operation of gov't. and business to accomplish this because it doesn't make sense to have clean roads and dirty sidewalks. And also, clean sidewalks and a dirty filthy subway station. It all must be cleaned. I would hire a thousand new cleaners for the City, and fewer parking enforcement officers. They'd be re-assigned or something. Toronto has to compete for the tourism buck with other Cities like Ottawa, New York, Chicago, Minnesota, Cleveland and so on. That money should come here. A clean City is what people notice first. And first impressions are always best. It gives people an idea of how people will enjoy their stay. But ultimately folks, it's for us. We live here, we have to deal with it. And have pride. The reality is simple but true. Tourists will leave the City and not come back (Except for business maybe), but we as Torontorians have to live here 100%. And we deal with the problems that never seem to go away. Also. Homelessness is a priority and should be made illegal. Period.

2. Congestion: These streets should be made "one way" streets during rush hour.
From 6am.-9am. and 4-6pm. This will alleviate the traffic coming into the City. In early 1990's, people were buying homes in the suburbs like Scarborough, Markham and just surrounding areas because taxes were a lot lower. It hasn't changed. I don't blame them for wanting to change. Indeed, when I lived near the City border at McCowan and Steeles I saw thousands of drivers all coming from Markham to go into the City and into downtown Toronto some of them. They all had great places to live, Beautiful homes and stuff but couldn't leave the City because they had forty and fifty thousand dollar jobs to go to. It's still going on.
So to deal with that, Some streets must be made One Way. There would be no parking on these streets either. East: Kingston Road. West. I'm not sure. Maybe
Bloor. Central: Yonge Street. (The longest Street in the World). Yes, Yonge St. It may be controversial but ultimately, the City will benefit. The key word here is initicitive. A bi-law can be implemented to make this law. Or whatever it takes. This idea will an have initial effect on traffic. No new roads to build, no construction, no extra congestion, and an extra way for drivers to get home. People are stressed out already after work. They should get home easier. But course, David Miller's idea is to tax you when you come into the City. Is that a good idea? Vote for him if you think so.

3. Transit: Traffic is not the total answer to dealing with congestion. So, let's deal with transit. People take TTC (Toronto Transit commission), because they don't want to deal with the odvious thing (congestion), even though they have $40,000 jobs (so don't underestimate the people on the subway, they may have a BMW sitting in the parking lot at home), there's also parking to deal with. I work downtown and don't pay for it, thankfully. It should be a drivers' decision if she/he wants to drive to work and pay for parking. This is good for business too. But it shouldn't be held against them either. I would create a ticket or pass that I would call a 'rush hour' pass/ticket/token, that would be good for rushhour. The Province would have to help too. Cash fares would be reduced to $1.00. They would be good for between 6-9am. and 3-6pm. I want to get people out of their cars, and in particular their SUV's. to taking public transit. I want the TTC to become offensive when it comes to drawing commuters. Let's actually get people out of their cars and into buses. A rush hour fare would do that. It would be a high priority as Mayor. This isn't being discriminate against drivers (much like David miller), it's giving people choice. But it doesn't tax them to death. It's option. I believe TTC would have more Commuters and thus draw more revenue.

4. Quiet City: I may not be right on this and you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a quiet City will help reduce crime. As well, it will reduce smog, and will make people will be a lot less stressed out. Taking indistinctness like, cars with loud mufflers, streetcars along rails (this may be drastic but you know what I mean),
with all the rustle and bustle of the City, I would change things that would make things more quiet. We wouldn't go deaf either.

I don't yet have an opinion yet on what to do with the Gardner but rest assured, I don't agree with Miller's ideas. God help us all. Thanks for your time. Now, I think I'll go have a cold one. Later.
bt logo

A typical Star Editorial.

Much like it's Commentary after Paul Martin called the /04 election, the Star in it's vote liberal theme, is saying we should be voting for Flip, flop, McFly. On and on it goes. But the one thing it doesn't mention, is Caledonia. At all. Typical. It called broken promises "expections that were to high and impossible to keep given the sorry state of the previous Gov't. finances." On the health tax, the Star says, "bringing in the premium was the right thing to do, because it benefits all Ontarians." I say, A broken promise is a broken promise. And I'm not better off either. But you know, I wouldn't care about a deficit either, two points:
1. Mike Harris inherited an over $7 billion deficit from the previous Bob Rae
Government, yet he lowered taxes in his first budget. No health tax.
2. I personally don't think the deficit matters, because surplus of deficit, he'd still
bring in that tax. Still, broken promise.

Next, the City of Toronto Act, gives Toronto City Council more power within it's boundries. I agree with this in essence. I just don't trust David Miller with that kind of power.
On education. A hot topic. The McGuinty liberals have appointed someone (the name escapes me), to help the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), to help them bring down their deficit, so doesn't this sound a lot like what Paul Christie
was doing for the previous Ernie Eves Gov't.? What makes matters worse is, that she used to work with the TDSB so I'm wondering, who's side is she on? Anyways, I'm sorry I don't remember her name. Also, labour issues have largely been settled...across the Province. Well, not all labour issues. The Hamilton School Board (teachers) are set to walk off the job in the near future. They may or may not, but it needs to be resolved, so not every labour issue is resolved just yet. So remember, this record, Broken promises, health tax, surpluses (they're as bad as deficits), education, and so on, and so on... Remember Caledonia, and $55 million that these Ontario liberals have spent on it, and the entire liberal record.
bt logo

Are Conservatives good for Cities?

This is a posting that I would like everyone to read and leave a comment on your take of this subject. "Are Conservatives good for cities?" A burning question that I've had since the end of the 2005/06 election when we proudly elected Stephen Harper and our Conservatives in Ottawa. Yet no seats in Toronto. Calgary and Edmonton always elect the Tories but outside Alberta we don't seem to do well. Here in Toronto (hogtown), there's a heavy media presence that have a biased opinion of the Conservatives, eg. CityTv, CTV, CFTO, of course CBC, which has very low ratings, but I'll bet it's ratings are highest here in Toronto. The Star, Globe and Mail as well as it's smaller affiliates like The Villager, Now magazine, that all hammer away at the Tories and very friendly to of course liberals. There are right wing media which are the Sun, National Post, Global TV (It's based outside Toronto), I worked very hard to get our Conservative Candidate elected and in the most recent bi-election I worked also to get David Hutcheon elected to the Ontario Legislature, without success. I still think we can win. But the media is no help. Indeed the front page of the Star read: Conservatives bad for Toronto: Miller Toronto mayor David Miller who endorsed Jack Layton for PM would say
that. So why? I think one of the key questions to ask is this: Who gets the money? Why is this important? Here's why. I'll give a quick eg. Normally I drive. But today because my car was in the shop I had to do my business using public transit. After praying for a safe journey, an advertisement on the Subway train said 'Oh Canada, the better way.' It urged that commuters should save their Metropasses and receipts and claim it on their income tax. Commuters will save approx. $300.00 a year by claiming transit passes. So, who gets the money? You do. Not the province, not David Miller and his socialist cronies. You do. But, who wants the money? They do. There was one thing that Stephen Harper said during the election. He was responding to what PMPM was saying about child care. Martin was saying that childcare spaces will be created with the liberal plan. Harper saw through that and said: the liberal plan is like putting money from one department to the next. That's not a solution. Parents need that money now. So again, the Conservatives put money, $100.00 a month into your hands instead of the hands of other governments. The liberal or NDP plan is 'we'll hang onto the money and create childcare spaces.' They both accused the Harper plan of not doing anything for childcare spaces, and for having to claim the $1,200 bucks as income. What scared me more then anything was Taliban Jack's accusations of having to claim the 1,200 bucks as income. It seemed like it defeated the cause. Okay Jack, that's fair. This is my honest opinion. And I say this without any favors to any political parties, including the Conservatives. I think that is being irresponsible. And I think that's what the Conservatives had in mind when they created their childcare plan. Jack Layton is talking about spending billions more for childcare spaces without any regard for the consequences. Deficits I mean. That's not being responsible. Shortly after the election, I saw Olivia Chow on CBC who emphasized, no wait, let me put it this way, EMPHASIZED, that the "Tory plan wouldn't buy a diaper a day." If that wasn't an insinuation that there wasn't enough money being spent, well... you get the point. The NDP plan is spend, spend, spend. With no repercussions for the future.
It's a lot like their healthcare plan, which they more or less created.
There's one thing I think the Conservatives should do to get into cities like Toronto. Toronto is a very multicultural City. Well, I think they should
start 'targeting' these groups. The liberals do because immigrants tend to vote for the Government who brought them here. What they (the Tories), should do is start targeting the families of people already here. This can multiply~ Big time. There's a lot of Chinese and Polish people here. And there's nothing more for an Immigrant then to bring his and her family here. This can even be done quietly. Without liberals and ndp knowing. They can't argue it because they base their votes on Immigrants. I haven't looked, but I wonder what the final votes were here in Toronto after the 1997 election and see if more people liberal. That would prove that Immigrants do vote liberal. Some day I'll look into it.
So, back to the original question. Are Conservatives good for Cities? The answer is yes. Media bias notwithstanding. When local (crazy?), politicians say the Tories are bad for Cities or specifically Toronto (hogtown), they complain of a fiscal imbalance. Or they don't fund local councils. Well actually, the feds pass money to the province and from there, the cities. The Tory plan is fundamentally different. They want you to have that money. This plan cannot apply to every federal program, like for eg. Healthcare or Immigration, but the Tory plan wants to avoid the beaucracy of writing a cheque to a Province only to see that money used for something else. Even the City can do that. Ultimately, it's we, the people,
the taxpayers who loose. A liberal Gov't. wants to hang onto that money for as long as possible and then do something with it. Again, beaucracy. Liberals and NDP want to spend money on things and not give tax breaks like the Conservatives do. They are tax and spend Governments. Conservatives believe money is better left in your hands, while having smaller governments. Less beaucracy, less taxes. Smaller Governments. That's the Tory way. I like it. When Mike Harris was Premier, he was accused of a lot of things. And he did make mistakes. But one thing he did was lower taxes. And unlike Governments before and after his mandate, his tax cuts helped create 1 million new jobs in Ontario. Lower taxes will of course put more money in our hands, create more jobs, expand business, create a bigger economy, generate more revenue for the Government. And I like Stephen Harper better then Paul Martin. I want to get this message out to all the people of Toronto, that once they understand the Conservative plan, they can embrace it, and say, I like that plan and vote Conservative next time. The media won't do anything to help but if us bloggers can do what we can here and throughout Canada, we can have a great Country.
bt logo

Negociating with the Taliban? Apparantly Jack's not alone

I find it appaling that this was written and read for all to see and read. Apparantly there are some who think you can think negociate with a terrorist regime. I read this in this in the NOW Magazine Which you can pick up every thursday here in Toronto. Some of their "experts" like Steven Staples of the Polaris Institute believe at the very least, we should be in Afghanistan but in a different capacity. Like peacekeeping or rebuilding and in not so dangerous places. David of the 4th Freedom Forum says 'how can NATO justify intervening so far from the North Atlantic region? I say what does location have to do with it? Karzai, (President of Afghanistan), was once a member of the taliban, are negotiations really beyond the pale?' I say maybe he was but not now. Second, it still doesn't mean you deal with the taliban. Karzai being a member doesn't have no bearing. 'What the NDP seems to be saying is that Canadian Troops shouldn't actually leave Afghanistan at all. They just ought to be doing other things.' I don't buy that for
a second. The NDP said 'Support our troops, bring them home.' It's NDP Party Policy. And after that we can dismantle them so we don't have to pay for a defense. I added that line. "Why can't Canada 'rotate' out of southern Afghanistan, where our troops are locked in a U.S. generated counerinsurgency operation? When I read this, I had the impression that the U.S.
was in control (but there are no U.S. troops there), and that we are just doing what
they say. I don't think so. We are there because we want to be there to combat terrorism. And we are a sovereign nation who answers to no one, which includes the U.S. It mentions that Spain withdrew it's troops, but we also have to remember that Spain had just had that terrorist attack which was during an election. It was a political debate that Spaniards had to decide. The opposing member promised to withdrawl the troops if elected. He won (I don't remember his name but he's the President now), and he pulled the troops. I found this statement somewhat immature. Negotiating ...is a smart military strategy considering that many Afghans fighting NATO troops ...have grievances with the Government but are not hardcore Taliban. Huh? these are people who are fighting and killing Canadian Troops (one earlier today) and they are not hardcore
taliban? The Taliban want things to be the way it used to be, before the invasion, so they can go on with their lifestyle and extreme religious beliefs. Which include sexual assault of Women. If any survive, they should be tried for war crimes. You don't negotiate with these insurgents. Or any terrorist regimes. Period. It's called get out or die. One thing I remember from the beginning of the war. It was the Taliban that were helping to get Al Quada out of Afghanistan. Now it's the Taliban we're trying to get rid of. I'm not sure. Anyways, I found the whole Article insulting. I just hope nobody believes it.
To let them know how you feel email at this address: news@nowtoronto.com
bt logo

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://southerntory.blogspot.com/2006/09/negociating-with-taliban-apparantly.html' title='Negociating with the Taliban? Wearing red would be great. Having a National flag is good. A shirt, a tee is also good, but most important, just show. Show your support to our troops. They are fighting for our freedom and way of life. The last thing we want in Canada and here in Toronto is a terrorist attack which forces us to change the way we do things, what with added security. Indeed, after 9-11 New York was changed irrevocably. New Yorkers will never see things the same way. Let's keep Toronto free from those who would harm us. The rally starts at 12:00 noon and is at Dundas Square which if you live here in Toronto, you know is at Yonge and Dundas. I hope to get a whole lot of pics while I'm there. Here's the link. Hope to see you there.
bt logo

Flippin' McGuinty

Talk about complaining. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says that the surplus is proof of a fiscal imbalance. Huh? Excuse me flip flop mcfly, but wasn't it just recently discovered that you're running a surplus? It's also been discovered that since /03 Ottawa has been sending money for education to this McGuinty Gov't. So what does he do with it? It's stays in general revenue. Never to be used for education. There's also the billion dollar health tax. But let's not forget. As I posted on my blog a couple months back, (McGuinty's raking in Millions), Surpluses mean taxes are to high. Period. One of the worst lines from flip flop mcfly was that the Conservatives were 'enjoying the benefits of good fiscal management from the previous liberal gov't. What? That has to be the worst statement from this Premier. Has he got nerve. Surpluses which mean high taxes, gas prices which I'm pretty sure the liberals were trying to take advantage of, what about scandals. Is that good fiscal mgnt. I wonder how many scandals McGuinty is involved in? Flip flop mcfly should remember one thing, there's a reason why Martin and those greedy liberals were thrown out of power. And why he won't last much longer. You know this fiscal imbalance was created by the liberals. Indeed, this recent surplus was done mostly the previous liberals. Now it's up to Stephen Harper and his Government to do something with it, so he put it towards the National Debt. Good for him. I can't help but wonder about the timing of this. McGuinty's had three years to complain about this. Why come out with guns a-blazing so suddenly. I don't think he likes to complain about his federal cousins. McGuinty while in Opposition accused the Tory Gov't of "fed bashin" when the fiscal balance mentioned. Now, he indeed admits there is a fiscal imbalance. And now he's blaming the Conservative Gov't. But only now has he attacked the federal gov't. If he really wants to represents Ontario, he should put aside political stripes and deal with the fiscal imbalance. This is a serious issue.
bt logo

Toronto Mayoral Race

Okay, so here I go again with links. Let's see if I can get right this time. The Toronto Mayoral Race should be heating up in the not to distant future. E-day is November 13/06. Keep in mind that this term will be for 4 years and not three. The current City Council has voted themselves a 9% raise which is for 4 years. That's another millions in pay for this Socialist Council. What I found stupid during these past three years of this Council's mandate is that a City bi-law prohibited Miss Universe from participating in a rally on City property (Nathan Phillips Square, City Hall), yet this Council allows homeless, beggars, panhandlers and the like to come and go and even sleep on City Hall property. I mean, if these people should be in the same catagory as Miss Universe, fine, but not allowing her access because of her Status as Miss Universe. Well...
something's wrong. The latest poll is that Miller is well ahead of Jane Pitfield 80% to 20%. It's a bit old. And we shouldn't really believe polls. Pitfield wants to roll back the 9% raise, while Miller who's NDP, wants to shut down part of the Gardner. What does Miller do for the Environment? He was recently quoted as saying " Parking Officers can hand out a lot of tickets and that's not a bad thing."
And I've got the tickets to prove it. They don't like drivers. That has to change. So do they. Fewer cars mean better Environment. At least that's their philosophy. Anyways, I and all our blogging friends based here in T.O. want change. We're working for it at least. One other thing on my mind is the TTC wildcat strike, back
in the summer. What ever happened to the employees in this illegal strike? Were they penalized? Deducted a days pay? Maybe, but who knows. The point is it's at least not widely known what happened. Which leaves one to wonder if there was any discipline. I'd like to find out. If things are bad now, what happens over the next four years. More of the same. I'd vote for Jane Pitfield just for her stand on the 9% raise. Watch for more updates.
bt logo

Stand Up!

There's no link to this posting since I seem to be having trouble with those things.
I would like everyone's opinion to this. Think of Canada's Military and how proud we as Canadians are of having a strong, capable group of men and women who put their lives on the line for our freedom, our way of life that we enjoy daily. What if 9-11 was here? What if it happens after? A lot of people think it won't. It'll happen somewhere else and we'll feel sorry for that Country. But what if it was here, like on the Transit system in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver? That's the thing, we're not expecting it. And I hope it doesn't. But it may. There's not one person, or one Country even after 9-11 that thought it could happen here.
The World is so large. There's so many cities, so many Countries that it seems so unlikely. But if it can't be prevented, well, it had to happen somewhere. What if it was, or is here in Canada. Would we be ready? Well, if it was here in Toronto, we wouldn't be ready. Not with our NDP City council praying that it doesn't. They'd probably find a way to raise taxes over a crisis like this. Which is why we need an armed forces. Jean Chretien ordered the Military to Afghanistan because of the need to deal with terrorism. He supported George W. Bush in this war, and so did Paul Martin. In fact PMPM at the time, supported Iraq, though he changed his mind after. Keep in mind that Alexa McDonough, the leader of the NDP at the time, opposed the war in Afghanistan and of course Iraq. Typical. One of the biggest problems is an opinion among Canadians. We don't need an armed forces.
Which is why liberal cutbacks during the nineties to our armed forces went almost unnoticed. We're not at war. We have no enemies. We have the United States next to us. Well, what if the U.S. declared war? Seems unlikely huh? Whatever. It's no excuse. Another excuse is why spend billions of dollars only to wait for something to happen? The best example of this is Pearl Harbor. Let's say the U.S. Gov't. cut back on military spending. Cut back, cut back much like previous liberal governments. Japan, had a much larger Navy then the U.S. But with cutbacks, it would have been much worse. Some thought Japan was better trained. Not likely. About ninety days after pearl harbor, the doolittle raid happened. The key is that there were no cutbacks to U.S. forces. They were ready. That's why the U.S. was able to respond quickly. What they needed to do was rebuild what was destroyed. They are a big wealthy Country. So are we. We can spend an extra 2 or three billion dollars to sustain our military. We are capable. The truth is, if the U.S. underfunded, what we would have seen is Canadian ships and destroyers watching the American coastline. Anyways, go back to the good old Trudeau days and you'll see a difference in policy with the military. It was Trudeau who wanted out of NATO. (It's no coincidence that Layton wants the same thing). When the public pleaded Trudeau not to, he backed out. But that didn't stop him from backing out of every mission, even peacekeeping missions, after that. He was colourful. What makes matters worse is that Stephen Harper has annouced defense spending for our forces. The planes, etc. are set to be ready and operational by 2009. If in the event a liberal Prime Minister came into power before that, we'd see those projects cut back or cancelled. Much like Chretien cancelled the EH101 helicopters in '93. At a cost of $500 million. There wasn't much argument either. It's a policy with liberal Governments that go back to Trudeau. I hope we win a Majority. What we need is for people to recognize a need for our Military. It's our pride. Our history. We have freedom because of the Armed Forces. And we are reminded of that daily. There's no excuse for waiting for something to happen. We loose our men and women. It is to prevent terrorism from our land and our cities. As a former member of our proud Service, I take personal pride, in their job, Their sacrifice, their dedication. Indeed so did I. Though, I never went to war. And I'm not looking to either. The recent election where we proudly elected the Conservative Government, said it, "Stand Up For Canada." Be proud. I can just see Dalton McGuinty. Time to wake up Dalton. CP24, just reported that she won. Look out liberals. Your goose should be cooked by October next year. Sure I was pulling for David Hutcheon, but this still sends a message to the McGuinty liberals that it's time to wake up. We've had enough and we want change. Gerard Kennedy won by 70% in the last general election in October 2003 and was a traditional liberal stronghold for at least a few elections. Even under PC rule, that was a safe liberal riding. Not anymore. There's been a few provincial bi-elections since 2003 and when the liberals loose, they would always downplay the bi-election saying they're not overly concerned and that it doesn't mean people are sending a message. Believe me, if they weren't getting that message before, they are now.
bt logo

Good News/Bad News

Well the early results show that Sylvia will win. But I just saw on CP24 TV that NDP Candidate Cheri DiNovo was in the lead about 2,000 votes. Sylvia Watson was second. The reporter said that Parkdale/High Park is a very politically active riding, and said that voter turnout won't be an issue. That's according to TV media. If you asked me and what I saw at the David Hutcheon soiree earlier, Sylvia's in the lead, David Hutcheon second and Cheri well behind in a poll box of about 200 voters, Cheri garnered only 6 votes. No kidding. The reporter was at the Watson location when reporting and was basing his report on a chart that showed the results which he said was "unscientific". The chart was based on people outside polling stations asked voters who they voted for. Still, I'm hopeful. This bi-election is proving to be very volatile. A trend can happen anywhere. Will
update shortly.
bt logo

I'm tired

Well after handing out flyers for the PC Candidate tonite, (David Hutcheon) I crawled home, broken back and all, to have something delicious to eat and to catch a few zzzzz. dreaming that my work was not in vain. I came across a gentleman who said he voting for our side and even wanted to put a sign on his front lawn. (There were liberal and NDP signs on the street, none of ours), I didn't
have one handy, and it was a bit late. Tomorrow is E-day and it wasn't going to get a lot of exposure anyways. To bad I didn't meet him a few weeks ago. But he is a supporter, he'll vote Progressive Conservative. And he says there are five other voters who will vote PC. That's great news. Bi-Election.

So tonite's debate at Bishop Marrocco had some liveliness to it. It was also very informative. The theme was on Education and specifically the funding formula. The panel of guests was more then the Candidates. They were: Sylvia Watson (Liberal) plus a member of the liberal government which was unusual because while she took questions from the audience, she actually had the name of Dalton McGuinty in front of her. He was suppose to be there but they sent her instead. Other members of the panel included, Frank DeJong (Green Party) Cheri
Dinovo (NDP), Howard Hampton (leader of the NDP), and of course David Hutcheon (Progressive Conservative). Like I said it was lively. But there were about 100 people, and most were from the party candidates which of course included myself. So it was very opinionated. Only about 20 minutes for the general public to ask questions, which was not enough time. Among the things that surprised me the most was about the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), it has a total staff of just over 30,000. About 15,000 of them is regular school teachers which is a suggestion of 'to many chiefs, not enough indians. Or very top heavy. The top half include Janitors, Librarians, Administrative staff like Principals and VP's, Secretary, Student Services, etc. The saddest part of the debate was brought up by our own Candidate David Hutcheon. His sons attend Warren Park School. It is one one of the Schools that is on the list of schools to be closed. Warren Park School is a special school because kids do not attend classes in same as most schools. Kids actually go about the school grounds where they learn about birds, rivers (I used to live on the same street as Warren Park, it's very beautiful), playground. It's a special school. Frank DiJong of the Greens said he would like to make Schools smaller. Not just classes but actual Schools. He didn't say how. lol. Sylvia Watson took a most of the flak from the audience because of the Government record on education and just it's overall policies. That's to be expected. I thought she handled it well. But her supporters took up the first 2 rows, who no doubt had a lot applause for her. That's about 20 with about 100 people in the whole place. Unfair. We had only about 7 supporters. Moving on, Autistic children became an issue. David Hutcheon and Howard Hampton took shots at this one. David Hutcheon said funding will be implimented for Autistic children including for kids over 6 years. Old. Right now
it is limited to kids who are six and under, and has always been that way. But it is being cut back by the McGuinty Gov't. Sylvia really got hammered on that
one. It looked bad when comments made by McGuinty back when he was in Opposition. I'm paraphrasing here but he called cutbacks to Autistic kids is insulting and against humanity. He was accusing the Tory Gov't. of cutting back at the time. Then when he became the Gov't. he cut it by some amount. He took a lot of flak for it and Sylvia took some tonite. There was one part of education
funding (I don't remember remember which part), that is paid for by the Federal Government. (I'll use blue for our Conservative Government in Ottawa). It is money, from Ottawa, to our Ontario Gov't. that (should) go to education. So what does McGuinty do with this money?, he puts in general revenue. No spending. This is not just bad for odvious reasons. Let's not forget. The McGuinty liberals have been running a surplus for the last two budgets. It is things like this
that contribute to it. Why is it that these liberal Govenments keep running surpluses. Paul Martin and his predessor ran surpluses year after year. McGuinty complained about the previous Harris/Eves Government for leaving a deficit. I say so what. Deficits can be made up. Surpluses are a choice which means taxes are too high. Let's move on. One of the wierdest statements said tonite was from Cheri Dinovo. It didn't help that it was September 11. On a subject about school transportation, getting kids to school with public transit (TTC), as well as school buses, she mentioned that Madrid, has one of the best public transit systems. She probably wasn't thinking that Madrid had a terrorist attack. No one seemed to respond to it. It's something that I noticed which I thought was a mistake. She was otherwise fine. There is one more Candidates meeting which is tomorrow night. September 12. Also at Bishop Marrocco Catholic School It was just announced at tonight's meeting. I will assume it's at the same time which is 8:00pm. If you're in the area, pop by and see for yourself how lively these things can get. More importantly, we'd love your support. Look for another update tomorrow. I'd like to extend my condolences to our American friends, as well as to the families of the 24 Canadians that were killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks. God Bless America, True North Strong and Free, our forces stand on guard for thee, our fight is against terrorism. Our troops fight side by side against an elusive enemy. At our border it has two hands shaking, with the line, United We Stand. Thank you for being our friend.
bt logo

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://southerntory.blogspot.com/2006/09/tonites-debate-bi-election.html' title='Tonite's Debate. Dylan, the creater of the site 'loose change' (loose screws or lost marbles maybe lol), calls it everyone's duty to look at this film or site. This he does so the site the becomes popular. The so-called plane into the pentagon was not a plane but a missile. The people on flight 93 he says could not use cell phones because they were to high, 35,000 feet and that the people in fact survived that crash but were hidden somewhere in the U.S. not to be heard from again. According to CBC news people, they tried to use their c-phones and could not. But a lot can happen in these things. First, planes do have phones so cell phones may not be necessary. Also, some phones are better then others. What did the CBC guys use. Next, the twin towers were not brought down by the planes but that little explosions called "squids" inside the building caused it. That means there would have to be inside people who are planning the attack also, so more suicide bombers. Which begs the question: the twin towers (T.T.)were the target of a terror attack which was in '93. Wouldn't there be security for people working there even if they were there for the first time? I remember the day of the attacks, A woman speaking to David Onley at Citytv on the phone live. She was speaking on the infrastructure of the T.T. She went right into detail on this and while I don't remember all the details she gave, she was in my opinion, an expert. Very knowledgeable. The CBC report mentions A lack of money for the 9-11 commission and the timing of the Commission (It took to long), as factors of the conspiracy. I don't think these conspiracies mean anything no matter how a large myth, and there are a lot of them, become. But you can be sure all the left wing media will be eating this up.
bt logo

Have some respect bloggers

I'd like to thank everyone for their interest in my blog. She makes a valid point because the McGuinty government is "pushing" the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) as well as the Catholic School Board to make $84 million in budget cuts. In my neighborhood there are at least three schools. All within a Km of each other. The CSB is being asked to cut $34.6 million from their budget. Signs are up, the Candidates are campaigning and campaign offices are churning. So let me take this time to invite all bloggers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to canvass the entire Parkdale Area this coming Saturday. I hope you can forgive me for this short notice, but we'd really like to see you out there at our Office. 202 Jane St. North of Bloor. On the West side of Jane. The Outreach begins at 9:30 am. As well as our entire campaign team, (all six of us), we will be joined by our beloved leader. The Right Honourable Mpp, Leader of the Opposition, John Tory. Also the future Premier of this great Province. We hope to see you there. We want all the help we can get. Further: There are at least two 'All Candidates' meetings in the next couple of weeks. One is on Wed. September 6/06 and the second is on Sunday, Sept. 10. Will update on the Where and When of these meetings. One of the questions that someone should ask Sylvia Watson is this: Did you vote in favor of the raise that City Councillors will receive next year?

UPDATE: Sunday, August 27/06. The all candidates meeting will be held at the Bishop Marocco Thomas Merton School. That is at the corner of Dundas and Bloor. It will be held September 7, from 7:30pm-9pm.

bt logo

Borys quits

Well it's about time. Ontario liberal MPBorys Wrzeshewskyj has resigned. Well sort of: He resigned from the position of 'Associate foreign affairs critic' This after comments where he thought Hezbollah, who is commited to the destruction of Israel, should be removed from the list of names of terrorist orginisations in Canada. My opinion is he should resign from the liberal party and sit as an Independent. All he's really doing is giving the liberals a bad name, which is bad enough already. It was the liberal Government that originally created the terror list and who included Hezbollah as a terrorist orginisation. So he should go on record as saying that his comments are regrettable and do not reflect the policy of the liberal party. I call his resignation the honourable thing to do. The question I have is, when will Peggy Nash do something like apologize for her comments.
bt logo

MD's should reject private health care

So according to the RedStar, we all should reject privatized health care. Well, Brian Day, an advocate for private care, was just elected as president of the CMA so I wonder what their chances are. In their Commentary, they talk about the health care crisis that forces patients without Doctors, long wait times and fewer beds. Then says it's a "World Wide Problem". Huh? Where did they go to come to that conclusion, Africa? Next it says people who push privatization say we're in a crisis. According to the Star, that's not true. Which just leaves me to wonder: What about that "world wide problem" that forces Canadians to longer wait times and fewer Doctors?
Hmmm. To support this argument, the Star mentions the former liberal gov't (Thank God)
"re-invested" $41 Billion over ten years. The key word being re-invested. This after they took so many billions out of the healthcare system. Like that helped matters. In Romanow's report (the third of it's kind), it (The Star) says that Canada's healthcare system is one of the most financially viable, and most fairest. I'll agree it's the most fairest. It also says it doesn't need more money, which leads me to wonder the same thing. Huh?
What I remember in Romanow's report to Parliament was more money was necessary. This I heard from Roy Romanow in his speech and in interviews after his report. Near the end of this RedStar Commentary, it calls Canada's fairness in the system one of the best. Well maybe. But I've heard in terms of healthcare delivery, we rank among the middle of the pack. This among G-8 Countries. There is one thing that I agree with. It says that
patients in a public system are waiting a long period period of time for care. Maybe to long. I'll agree with that. Which means that if Canada moves to a public/private system, something must be done about the public system first. For this I give high marks to Prime Minister Stephen Harper for his promise of a wait times guarantee.
bt logo

Truth Seekers

In the Sunday Sun Alison Downie talks more about Bloggers influence in the MSM. A typical NDP would would want a say on these things.
Then again, there's a reason why they're not the Gov't., never have (federally), never will. They also want the Accountability Act Bill C-2, to include a rule that would prevent MP's from switching from on party to the other. Again, typical. Don't they realize there's no high ground to forming a Gov't.
bt logo

bt logo

Parkdale/High Park Bi-Election/Update

Sylvia Watson will run for the Fib-erals in the upcoming Parkdale/High Park bi-election. Signs have already been posted on lawns. Myself, I will be volunteering for the Conservative Candidate, David Hutcheon. Watson is a councillor for the David Miller Toronto City Council. One of his pet supporters. lol. For the ndp it will be Cheri DiNovo. I will keep you up to date as to the happenings on the campaign trail. One thing to expect is a visit by the leaders in this bi-election. This riding belongs to Gerard Kennedy
and the Ontario liberals who have owned it for at least a few elections. It should be safe to say that it will stay liberal. However, if it doesn't, it will be an understatement to say the least. It will be a reflection on these Ontario liberals, who no doubt will start kicking it in gear for the next election, expected in October of /07.
Watch for more updates.
bt logo
